Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) has announced the introduction of a new UK Emissions Trading Scheme (UK ETS) Emissions Charge, reinforcing the shipping industry’s transition toward carbon pricing and stricter environmental compliance. The surcharge is designed to recover costs associated with the UK’s emissions trading framework, which places a price on greenhouse gas emissions from maritime transport calling at UK ports.
The UK ETS forms part of the British government’s strategy to reduce carbon emissions and achieve net-zero targets. As shipping becomes increasingly subject to emissions regulations, container carriers are introducing dedicated environmental surcharges to offset the cost of purchasing emissions allowances required under the scheme.
According to OOCL, the UK ETS Emissions Charge will apply to cargo moving on affected services involving UK ports. The surcharge will vary depending on trade lane, cargo type, and container size, with specific rates and implementation dates communicated through the carrier’s regional offices and customer advisories. Customers are encouraged to verify the applicable charges before booking shipments.
The introduction of the UK ETS charge follows similar environmental cost recovery measures adopted by major global shipping lines in response to evolving carbon regulations in Europe and the United Kingdom. The move reflects the industry’s broader shift toward incorporating emissions-related costs into freight pricing while supporting compliance with increasingly stringent climate policies.
For shippers, the new surcharge represents another factor influencing overall transportation costs, particularly for UK import and export cargo. Logistics providers and cargo owners are expected to factor the additional expense into supply chain planning and contract negotiations as carbon pricing becomes a permanent feature of international maritime trade.
OOCL stated that the emissions charge will be reviewed periodically and adjusted when necessary to reflect changes in carbon allowance prices, regulatory developments, and operational conditions. The carrier reaffirmed its commitment to supporting customers through transparent pricing while continuing investments in fleet efficiency, fuel optimization, and sustainability initiatives aimed at reducing the environmental impact of its operations.
