New terminal expected to support delivery of more than 11,000 additional vehicles annually by rail
Maruti Suzuki India Limited has commenced rail-based vehicle dispatches to the newly operationalised Pollachi Railway Terminal in Tamil Nadu, becoming the first passenger vehicle manufacturer to dispatch automobiles to the terminal by rail.
The company’s first automobile rake, carrying 120 vehicles including Wagon R, Ertiga, Dzire and Celerio, reached Pollachi earlier this week. The rake was flagged off from Maruti Suzuki’s in-plant railway siding at Manesar on August 18.
Maruti Suzuki worked closely with Indian Railways to operationalise the Pollachi Railway Terminal for automobile dispatches. The new destination strengthens the company’s rail distribution network in southern India, alongside its existing rail dispatches to Coimbatore.
The terminal is expected to handle nearly 70 automobile rakes annually, enabling the delivery of more than 11,000 additional vehicles each year through rail to the region. The facility is also expected to strengthen Maruti Suzuki’s ability to meet customer demand during the upcoming festival season.
Maruti Suzuki began using railways for outbound vehicle transportation in FY 2014-15 as part of its efforts to reduce carbon emissions, fuel consumption and road congestion. Since then, the company has steadily increased the share of rail in its vehicle dispatches.
Rail currently accounts for 26.5% of Maruti Suzuki’s outbound vehicle dispatches, up from 5% in FY 2014-15. The company has cumulatively transported more than 32 lakh vehicles by rail to date.
Maruti Suzuki aims to further increase the share of rail-based vehicle dispatches to 35% by FY 2030-31, reinforcing its focus on sustainable and green logistics.
The Pollachi Railway Terminal was redeveloped under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme and inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi through video conferencing in March 2026. It is among 20 railway stations renovated under the scheme in Tamil Nadu, aimed at improving passenger amenities, infrastructure and connectivity while also supporting freight movement.
The commencement of automobile dispatches to Pollachi marks another step in expanding rail-based logistics infrastructure and strengthening sustainable vehicle distribution across southern India.
