Hapag-Lloyd has successfully completed its first SIMOPS (simultaneous operations) bunkering of ISCC EU-certified biomethanol, supplied by Goldwind, for the Seaspan Amazon in Busan, South Korea.

The operation marks an important step in moving alternative marine fuels from production into practical, large-scale maritime use. Produced at Goldwind’s integrated facility in Hinggan League, China, the biomethanol was transported through an international supply chain and bunkered while other vessel and port operations continued simultaneously.

The milestone follows a long-term fuel supply agreement signed in 2024, under which Goldwind is expected to supply Hapag-Lloyd with 250,000 tonnes annually of a bio- and e-methanol blend from the end of 2027.

The early biomethanol delivery is enabling both companies to gain operational experience and further develop the logistics and processes required for future large-scale alternative fuel supply.

Along with recent biomethanol bunkering operations involving the Seaspan Amazon and Seaspan Yangtze, the latest operation provides valuable practical experience as Hapag-Lloyd prepares additional methanol-capable vessels for deployment.
