APM Terminals and the Suez Canal Container Terminal (SCCT) in Egypt marked the inauguration of a USD 500 million expansion at East Port Said, adding new capacity and jobs to the facility, APM Terminals said in a news release.

The ceremony, attended by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, officially opened 955 meters of new quay and 510,000 square meters of additional yard space, supported by 12 quay cranes, 30 electric RTGs and more than 90 trucks. The upgrade increases annual capacity by 2.2 million TEUs, raising SCCT’s total capacity to 7 million TEUs.

The project emphasizes sustainability through the deployment of electric RTGs and broader investments in battery-electric equipment, renewable energy and improved energy efficiency, aligning with APM Terminals’ goal of reaching net zero emissions by 2040. The expansion is set to generate more than 1,000 new jobs.

SCCT is one of eight APM Terminals hub facilities forming the backbone of the East-West network operated by A. P. Moller – Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd. Investments have supported rapid transshipment and enabled digital tools including digital twins.

According to the latest Container Port Performance Index by the World Bank and S&P Global Market Intelligence, Port Said and SCCT ranked 3rd globally and 1st in the region for container port efficiency in 2024.

APM Terminals is a global port operator headquartered in The Hague, functioning as part of A. P. Moller – Maersk. The company manages a network of container terminals worldwide and develops port infrastructure, technology and operations solutions for the maritime logistics industry.

Suez Canal Container Terminal (SCCT) is a joint venture container terminal located in East Port Said, operating as a dedicated transshipment hub at the northern entrance of the Suez Canal. It functions under concession agreements with Egyptian authorities and serves major east–west shipping routes.
