APM Terminals and EUROGATE Group have announced plans to invest €1 billion to transform North Sea Terminal Bremerhaven (NTB) into one of Europe’s most modern and sustainable container facilities.

The investment, which marks 25 years of cooperation between the two partners at NTB, will focus on upgrading the terminal’s superstructure. The state and federal governments are expected to support the project through parallel investments in port infrastructure, subject to required approvals.

The announcement was made by Vincent Clerc, CEO of A.P. Moller – Maersk, alongside Igor van den Essen, Managing Director Africa & Europe at APM Terminals, Bremen Mayor Andreas Bovenschulte and Michael Blach, Chairman of the EUROGATE Group Management Board.

Under the plan, NTB’s annual handling capacity will be expanded from 3 million TEU to 4 million TEU. The expansion is aimed at strengthening cargo flows into and out of Germany, enhancing supply chain resilience and reinforcing Bremerhaven’s role as a key North Sea gateway.

The modernisation programme will incorporate advanced equipment and digital solutions to improve operational efficiency and competitiveness. A central pillar of the upgrade is sustainability: the terminal is intended to operate with zero greenhouse gas emissions following the modernisation, achieved through the use of electric equipment and renewable energy — a first for a container terminal in Germany.

The project underscores the long-term strategic importance of Bremerhaven within European container logistics and signals continued investment in infrastructure to meet future trade and environmental demands.
