The development of Vizhinjam International Seaport received a significant boost after authorities granted approval for setting up a logistics park and a marine bunkering facility near the port premises.

The proposed logistics park is expected to enhance cargo handling efficiency and strengthen multimodal connectivity by integrating warehousing, container freight stations, cold storage, and value-added logistics services. The facility aims to support transshipment operations and attract greater export-import traffic through Vizhinjam, positioning it as a key gateway on international shipping routes.

In addition, the approved bunkering facility will enable vessels calling at Vizhinjam to refuel locally, reducing dependency on foreign ports for marine fuel supplies. Industry observers say the move could help the port tap into the growing demand for competitive bunkering services along major East-West trade lanes.

Officials indicated that the projects will generate employment opportunities and promote ancillary businesses in the region. Improved infrastructure is also expected to lower logistics costs for exporters and importers in southern India.

Vizhinjam Port, strategically located near international shipping lanes, has been steadily expanding its infrastructure to emerge as a major transshipment hub. The newly approved projects are seen as critical steps toward building a comprehensive port-led industrial ecosystem and enhancing Kerala’s maritime competitiveness.

Work on detailed planning and implementation is expected to commence shortly, with stakeholders optimistic about accelerated development in the coming months.
