CJ Darcl Logistics Ltd has inducted its first heavy-duty battery electric vehicle (BEV) in collaboration with Volvo Trucks, marking a significant step towards integrating high-capacity electric freight into its core operations.

The induction represents a transition from pilot projects to large-scale deployment of electric mobility within the company’s logistics network. The vehicle is not only the first heavy-duty BEV in CJ Darcl’s fleet but also the third such truck introduced by Volvo Trucks in India, positioning the company among early adopters of heavy-duty electric freight technology in the country.

“Sustainability is becoming central to how logistics networks are designed and operated. With this induction, we are moving towards integrating cleaner technologies into mainstream operations. As the industry evolves, we at CJ Darcl Logistics are on a mission to become a carbon-neutral company,” said Nikhil Agarwal. “By promoting sustainable practices, we are actively working towards achieving this goal while setting an example for the logistics industry.”

The development builds on CJ Darcl’s 2024 initiative, “Driving Towards a Greener Tomorrow,” under which the company deployed electric vehicles for intra-city aftermarket supply operations in Bengaluru. That phase demonstrated the operational feasibility of electric mobility within its network. The addition of a heavy-duty BEV now expands the use case to higher payloads and longer-haul routes.

The partnership with Volvo Trucks was developed over 18 months and involved detailed assessments of technical specifications, route optimisation, payload capacity, and system integration. Volvo’s electric powertrain expertise and established presence in India’s commercial vehicle segment have supported the transition to heavy-duty electric freight operations.

CJ Darcl said the move aligns with its broader decarbonisation strategy, which focuses on measuring, reporting, and reducing Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 emissions. The integration of electric vehicles into its multimodal logistics network reflects a growing shift towards low-emission freight solutions, in line with evolving customer expectations and national carbon reduction goals.

CJ Darcl Logistics operates across 6,691 locations in India, supported by a vendor base of over 554,000. In FY25, the company transported 22.42 million metric tonnes of cargo, served more than 2,277 customers, and reported revenues exceeding ₹5,000 crore.
