Global shipping giant CMA CGM has announced plans to deploy an electric barge on the Fos–Lyon corridor, a major inland and coastal trade route in France, as part of its push toward sustainable logistics.
The new electric barge aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution, supporting CMA CGM’s broader goal of promoting eco-friendly transport solutions across its European network. The service is expected to carry containers and bulk cargo efficiently, providing a low-carbon alternative to traditional road and river transport.
Officials said the initiative is part of the company’s ongoing efforts to decarbonize freight operations, enhance multimodal connectivity, and respond to increasing regulatory and customer demand for greener supply chains. The Fos–Lyon corridor, linking the Mediterranean port of Fos-sur-Mer to the industrial and logistics hub of Lyon, plays a crucial role in regional cargo movement, making it an ideal route for this pilot service.
Industry experts noted that electrification of inland shipping can significantly lower emissions, reduce traffic congestion on roads, and improve overall supply-chain sustainability, aligning with European climate targets. CMA CGM’s deployment of the electric barge is expected to set a benchmark for other operators in the region.
