Global container port capacity has crossed the 33 million TEU mark, underscoring the continued expansion of maritime infrastructure despite a challenging trade environment.
According to latest industry data, capacity growth has been driven largely by ongoing terminal expansions, new port developments and efficiency upgrades across Asia and the Middle East. Several emerging markets have strengthened their positions as regional transhipment and gateway hubs.
Iran has entered the top 20 countries globally by container port capacity for the first time, reflecting sustained investments in port infrastructure and terminal modernisation. Capacity additions at key ports, including Shahid Rajaee, have helped lift the country’s overall ranking.
While capacity continues to rise, industry analysts caution that the pace of growth could outstrip demand in some regions, potentially leading to overcapacity and intensified competition among ports. Operators are therefore increasingly focusing on productivity gains, digitalisation and value-added services to differentiate themselves and improve utilisation.
The milestone highlights a structural shift in global container logistics, with greater capacity coming online outside traditional port powerhouses, reshaping trade flows and competitive dynamics across key shipping corridors.
