In a landmark move aimed at enhancing maritime safety and security, the Directorate General of Shipping (DG Shipping) and the International Group of P&I Clubs (IG P&I) formalised their collaboration through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The agreement was exchanged during the high-profile conference titled “Jalasya Rakṣā, Janasya Surakṣā: Ocean Sentinel — Maritime Safety & Security in the 21st Century”.

The MoU exchange also marked the commencement of the 75-Year Commemorative Events of DG Shipping, celebrating its long-standing role in regulating, guiding, and advancing India’s maritime sector.

The partnership underscores a shared commitment between DG Shipping and the IG P&I Clubs to promote global best practices, strengthen safety protocols, and advance security frameworks in the maritime domain. With the IG P&I representing 12 member clubs that collectively provide liability cover for approximately 90% of the world’s ocean-going tonnage, the collaboration is set to bring world-class expertise and resources to India’s shipping ecosystem.

Speaking at the event, senior officials from both organisations emphasised the growing importance of international cooperation in addressing 21st-century maritime challenges such as cyber threats, environmental protection, and evolving safety regulations. The alliance is expected to facilitate knowledge sharing, capacity building, and joint initiatives in risk management, incident prevention, and crew welfare.

The conference, attended by maritime leaders, policy makers, shipping company executives , and domain experts, served as a platform for in-depth discussions on the future of maritime safety, security, and sustainability in a rapidly changing global trade environment.

This MoU signifies a new chapter in India’s engagement with the global maritime community, aligning with the nation’s vision of becoming a secure, sustainable, and innovation-driven maritime hub.
