Exporters have urged the government not to impose any restrictions on onion exports, warning that such measures could hurt farmers’ incomes and undermine India’s credibility in global markets.
Industry representatives said onion exports play a crucial role in supporting domestic prices and ensuring remunerative returns for growers, particularly during periods of surplus production. They argued that sudden export curbs could lead to a sharp fall in farmgate prices, adversely affecting millions of onion farmers across key producing states.
Exporters also noted that India has successfully maintained adequate domestic supplies while meeting overseas demand and stressed that stable export policies are essential for retaining international buyers. Frequent restrictions, they said, could encourage importing countries to shift to alternative suppliers, resulting in a long-term loss of market share for Indian exporters.
The industry has called on the government to adopt a balanced approach that safeguards consumer interests without disrupting export trade. Exporters further recommended strengthening supply-chain management and maintaining buffer stocks to address any domestic shortages rather than resorting to export restrictions.
The appeal comes amid concerns over price fluctuations and supply conditions in the domestic market, with stakeholders closely monitoring the government’s policy stance on onion exports.
