India’s gross exports of polished diamonds fell again during September, compared with the same month in 2022.

But actual foreign sales in dollars are increasing month on month, according to new figures from the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC).

Exports during September were $1.67bn, up almost 19 per cent on August. In turn August exports were up almost 16 per cent on July.

Coming months will be impacted by a voluntary ban on rough imports, from 15 October to 15 December, proposed by GJEPC and other industry bodies.

India’s gross imports of rough diamonds from April to September were $7.46bn, a decline of 20.8 per cent on the same period in 2022. GJEPC did not provide a monthly breakdown of imports.

Gross exports across the whole gem and jewelry sector for September were $3.02bn, down 19.8 per cent year on year.
