The Japan Transport and Tourism Research Institute (JTTRI) has strengthened its engagement with India’s maritime sector by signing a series of five-year memorandums of understanding (MoUs) focused on advancing port research, innovation and knowledge exchange.

The agreements are aimed at fostering long-term cooperation in areas such as port development, logistics efficiency, maritime sustainability, digital transformation and policy research. Through the partnerships, JTTRI and Indian institutions will collaborate on studies, technical exchanges, capacity-building programs and joint research initiatives designed to support the modernization of port infrastructure and operations.

The collaboration reflects the growing strategic importance of maritime connectivity and logistics in supporting trade growth and economic development. Both sides are expected to leverage their expertise to identify best practices and develop innovative solutions for improving port performance and supply chain resilience.

Under the MoUs, researchers and industry experts will work together on projects related to smart ports, green shipping, multimodal logistics integration and emerging technologies that can enhance operational efficiency. The partnership will also facilitate the exchange of knowledge and experience between Japanese and Indian maritime stakeholders.

India has been investing heavily in port modernization and logistics infrastructure as part of broader efforts to reduce logistics costs and strengthen its role in global supply chains. International research partnerships are increasingly viewed as important tools for accelerating innovation and adopting global best practices in port management.

JTTRI, which has extensive experience in transport and tourism policy research, is expected to contribute technical expertise and analytical support to collaborative projects. The agreements are also likely to create opportunities for joint workshops, academic exchanges and policy dialogues involving government agencies, research institutions and industry participants.

Maritime industry stakeholders have welcomed the initiative, noting that enhanced research cooperation can support the development of more efficient, sustainable and technology-driven ports. As cargo volumes continue to grow and supply chains become more complex, innovation and data-driven decision-making are becoming increasingly important for maintaining competitiveness.

The five-year collaboration is expected to deepen India–Japan cooperation in the maritime sector while contributing to the long-term development of ports and logistics infrastructure, supporting trade facilitation and economic growth in the region.
