Kirloskar Oil Engines (KOEL) has reaffirmed its commitment to delivering India’s first locally manufactured marine engine by April 2028, marking a major milestone in the country’s push for indigenous shipbuilding and marine equipment production.

The company’s leadership said the project remains on schedule, with design, engineering, and localisation efforts progressing steadily. The upcoming marine engine is expected to cater to a range of commercial and defence maritime applications, reducing dependence on imported propulsion systems.

KOEL is working to develop a robust domestic supply chain ecosystem to support the initiative, aligning with the government’s broader “Make in India” and maritime self-reliance objectives. Industry observers note that domestic production of marine engines could significantly enhance India’s competitiveness in global shipbuilding and repair markets.

The company is investing in advanced manufacturing capabilities, testing infrastructure, and technical collaborations to ensure the engine meets international performance and emission standards. Once operational, the facility is expected to support both domestic demand and potential export opportunities.

If delivered on schedule, the April 2028 rollout would represent a landmark achievement for India’s marine engineering sector, strengthening the country’s position in high-value maritime manufacturing.
