Following an overwhelming response to the direct weekly shipping service to China via Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata, the port is exploring the possibility of establishing direct services to other East Asian countries.

SMP Kolkata, formerly known as Kolkata Port Trust, had inaugurated direct weekly service from China to Kolkata in July last year. The China Calcutta Service (CCS) at Kolkata Dock System, in alliance with Pacific International Lines, has reduced cost and transit time.

“We are witnessing regular growth for the China Calcutta Service. Currently, we are exploring possibilities of direct shipping service to other Far East Asian or Southeast Asian countries also,” Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata, Deputy Chairperson Samrat Rahi said.

    Haldia’s strong growth

The port authority launched a direct container vessel service connecting the Haldia Dock Complex (HDC) with Jebel Ali Port in the UAE last year, but the service was later discontinued.

SMP Kolkata comprises two dock systems — Kolkata Dock System and Haldia Dock Complex (HDC).

    Expanded connectivity push

Backed by direct vessels from China, rising container traffic, and port-linked express services, Haldia Dock Complex (HDC) has been witnessing a significant increase in monthly container throughput.

HDC achieved its highest-ever monthly container throughput in November 2025, handling an impressive 21,691 TEUs. In September, it handled 20,627 TEUs.

“We have appointed an experienced business marketing officer to look after the operations at Haldia Dock Complex. We are promoting container handling here. Now, bigger vessels can come to Haldia. We have started a direct rail line, called Port-Link Express, from Kolkata to Haldia for both export and import, Rahi informed.

The Port-Link Express is run by two to three parties, including diversified PSU Balmer Lawrie. It ensures a direct link between the two dock systems.

“Barges movements between Haldia and Kolkata can happen very soon. Once this inter-port movement commences, it would help the throughput grow further,” said the Deputy Chairperson.
