Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has called for the introduction of reefer train services and stronger rail connectivity to accelerate the state’s export growth and improve logistics efficiency for key industries.
The proposal focuses on enhancing cold-chain transportation for perishable goods such as seafood, fruits, vegetables, dairy products, and pharmaceuticals, enabling producers to reach domestic and international markets faster while reducing spoilage and transit losses.
Reefer trains, equipped with temperature-controlled containers or wagons, can provide cost-effective long-distance transport compared with road movement, especially for bulk agricultural and processed food shipments. Improved rail links would also support industrial cargo, container traffic, and multimodal logistics integration with ports.
Andhra Pradesh, with its long coastline and major ports including Visakhapatnam, Krishnapatnam, Kakinada, and Gangavaram, is strategically positioned to become a stronger export hub. Better rail connectivity to ports and production centers could lower logistics costs and increase competitiveness for exporters.
Industry observers note that efficient cargo evacuation from inland districts to seaports remains crucial for scaling exports in sectors such as marine products, agri-commodities, textiles, electronics, and pharmaceuticals.
Naidu’s push aligns with broader national efforts to modernize freight infrastructure, expand cold-chain networks, and strengthen supply chains under India’s export-led growth strategy.
If implemented, reefer trains and upgraded rail corridors could significantly enhance Andhra Pradesh’s ability to attract investment, increase trade volumes, and emerge as a leading logistics gateway on India’s east coast.
