Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) is set to mark a major milestone in India’s aviation and logistics sector with the commencement of international passenger flights and dedicated cargo freighter operations from July 15, 2026.

The announcement was made by NMIA Chairman Captain B.V.J.K. Sharma during the BCBA Logistics Conclave 2026 in Mumbai, where he outlined the airport’s phased operational strategy and long-term vision to establish the facility as a leading aviation and cargo hub for Western India.

The airport is expected to begin operations with approximately 18 weekly freighter services, reflecting a strong initial emphasis on air cargo. According to Captain Sharma, customs authorities have already completed inspections of the facility, while final approvals, including Section 45 certification and courier and cargo code clearances, are currently being processed. A customs trade notice is expected by July 5, paving the way for the scheduled launch.

“On July 15, we are starting with freighters and expect operations to ramp up to nearly 18 weekly flights. We are also hopeful that international passenger services will commence on the same day,” Sharma said.

    Cargo-Centric Strategy

NMIA’s phased rollout places cargo operations at the forefront, a move aimed at addressing growing demand for air freight capacity in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The airport’s management believes that strengthening cargo infrastructure from the outset will help establish operational efficiency while supporting India’s expanding trade and logistics requirements.

At full development, the airport is projected to handle up to 3.2 million metric tonnes of cargo annually, positioning it among the country’s largest air freight gateways. Industry stakeholders view the development as a significant boost for sectors such as pharmaceuticals, electronics, perishables, e-commerce and high-value manufacturing.

    Expansion Plans Underway

The airport is also revising plans for its future Terminal 2 development. Initially designed to accommodate 30 million passengers annually, the terminal is now being redesigned to handle 50 million passengers per year.

Sharma said the airport’s ultimate objective is to become a 90-million-passenger facility with integrated international operations concentrated within Terminal 2 once expansion phases are completed.

“When our next terminal is ready, we intend to consolidate international passenger traffic there as part of our long-term development plan,” he noted.

    Focus on Gulf Connectivity

Initial international passenger services are expected to focus on short-haul Gulf destinations, serving one of India’s busiest travel and trade corridors. The Gulf region remains a key market due to strong business links, labour mobility and cargo demand between India and the Middle East.

    Multimodal Connectivity

To support future growth, NMIA is investing in extensive multimodal transport infrastructure. Planned connectivity projects include Metro Line 8, enhanced highway access, future high-speed rail integration and potential water transport links, aimed at improving access to the airport from Mumbai and surrounding industrial regions.

Industry experts believe the airport’s strategic location and cargo-first approach could significantly ease congestion at Mumbai’s existing aviation facilities while creating new opportunities for logistics providers, exporters and airlines.

With international operations scheduled to begin next month, NMIA is poised to become a key pillar in India’s ambition to expand aviation capacity and strengthen its position in global supply chains.
