The proposal for a third railway line between Ranaghat and Krishnanagar city stations in West Bengal’s Nadia district is set to enhance freight transport to Bangladesh via the Gede-Darshana border. The project, pending Railway Minister’s approval, aims to bolster regional trade and development.
The proposed 26 km line, costing Rs 474.09 crore, has received backing from the Railway Board and promises to significantly boost transportation efficiency. Eastern Railway officials highlighted the project’s robust economic viability, with impressive Financial and Economic Internal Rates of Return, making a strong case for approval.
Expected to complete within three years, the project will ease congestion and improve punctuality on a crucial suburban and freight corridor. With enhanced connectivity to Bangladesh, the railway line aims to achieve 169 per cent capacity by 2028-29, positioning itself as a vital component of West Bengal’s transport infrastructure.
