Indian onion exporters are diversifying their sourcing strategies and coordinating supplies from multiple markets to fulfil overseas orders amid fluctuations in availability, prices and export demand.

Exporters are managing procurement carefully to ensure consistent supplies for international buyers while navigating changes in domestic arrivals and market prices. The availability of onions from different producing regions can vary depending on harvesting cycles, weather conditions and transportation costs, prompting traders to adjust their sourcing arrangements.

India is a major supplier of onions to international markets, particularly in neighbouring countries and parts of the Middle East and Asia. Maintaining reliable shipments is important for exporters seeking to retain buyers and meet delivery commitments.

However, fluctuations in domestic prices and supply availability can affect export competitiveness. Higher procurement and logistics costs may squeeze margins, particularly when overseas buyers are reluctant to accept higher prices. Exporters must therefore balance purchasing costs, quality requirements and shipment schedules when fulfilling orders.

Access to supplies from multiple markets can provide greater flexibility and help traders manage temporary shortages in individual sourcing regions. Efficient transportation, grading, packaging and storage are also important for maintaining product quality and reducing losses during transit.

Exporters will continue to monitor domestic arrivals, price movements and overseas demand to determine their sourcing strategies. Stable supplies and competitive pricing will remain key factors in sustaining India’s position in the global onion trade.
