PSA Antwerp has launched a new express barge service linking its deepsea terminals in Antwerp with Willebroek inland terminals, aiming to enhance freight connectivity and intermodal transport options in the region. The “Meerhout – PSA Express” service will operate on a fixed tri-weekly schedule, running between the Noordzee Terminal in Antwerp and ITG Meerhout, providing predictable and reliable barge calls every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
The new barge connection is designed to improve the efficiency of inland waterway transport and support freight flows between the Port of Antwerp and Belgium’s inland hinterland. By working with fixed time slots and coordinated operational agreements, PSA Antwerp says the service will deliver better reliability and planning for barge operators and their customers, encouraging a modal shift from road to waterway transport.
The initiative reflects PSA Antwerp’s broader strategy to expand multimodal connectivity and optimise cargo flows via inland waterways, easing road congestion and reducing emissions linked to freight transport. The barge link also complements the port’s extensive inland barge and rail solutions that connect Antwerp with key European logistics hubs.
Industry analysts note that strengthening barge links like this can enhance Antwerp’s competitive position as a major European logistics gateway, offering shippers more sustainable and cost-effective transport options between seaports and inland markets.
