Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port has set an ambitious target of handling around 74 million tonnes (MT) of cargo during the current financial year, building on its strong operational performance and sustained growth in cargo volumes.

The port, which comprises the Kolkata Dock System and the Haldia Dock Complex, handled approximately 71 MT of cargo during the previous financial year. The higher target reflects the port’s confidence in maintaining its growth trajectory and further strengthening its role as a key gateway for eastern India’s maritime trade.

Speaking on the outlook for the current fiscal, Deputy Chairman Samrat Rahi said the port is well-positioned to achieve the target based on its consistent compound annual growth rate (CAGR) over recent years.

Rahi also highlighted significant improvements in container handling operations. According to him, the port’s daily container handling capacity has increased by nearly 1.5 times over the past 18 months, driven by operational enhancements and improved infrastructure. The increased capacity is expected to support rising container traffic and improve turnaround times for shipping lines and cargo stakeholders.

The expansion in container handling capability, coupled with steady growth across cargo segments, is expected to strengthen the port’s competitiveness and contribute to achieving the 74 MT cargo handling target during FY 2026–27.
