Kolkata’s Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port (SMP) has embarked on an ambitious modernisation programme aimed at sharply reducing vessel turnaround time while advancing its zero-net-carbon vision. Announced by a senior port official, the initiative combines technology upgrades and infrastructure expansion to deliver faster operations, lower costs, and a cleaner urban environment.

The multi-pronged plan includes the deployment of eight new mobile harbour cranes and the introduction of night navigation, expected to cut the average turnaround time from five days to four. New floating cranes at Sagar Island will allow larger ships to offload dry bulk cargo in deeper waters, easing congestion in the main port channels. Capacity will be increased by 30 million tonnes, helping address the challenges posed by the port’s riverine setting and draft limitations.

Environmental benefits are central to the plan. Reducing waiting and berthing times will lower fuel consumption and emissions from idling vessels, improving air quality in surrounding areas. The construction of new lock gates and the Balagarh Project—an upstream facility to decongest existing docks—will further streamline cargo movement and cut traffic-related pollution.

Economic inclusivity is also in focus. By improving efficiency and attracting public-private partnerships under schemes like the Sagarmala Project’s Waterfront Warehouse, the port aims to create a more resilient logistics ecosystem benefiting both large corporations and small businesses. Officials say the strategy will boost job security, promote gender-neutral employment growth, and reinforce Kolkata’s role as a major trade hub.

“This modernisation is about building a future that is both profitable and principled,” the official said, underscoring the port’s commitment to sustainable and inclusive development.
