A hundred tonnes of Atap rice were imported from India through the Banglabandha land port yesterday (08 December), for the second time this year, in Panchagarh. Four trucks of rice reached the country’s port from noon to afternoon yesterday, Sunday.

Banglabandha Landport Limited Manager Abul Kalam Azad confirmed the matter.

It is learned that the rice was imported by Shamsul Alam, the importer and owner of Salma Trading, a Chattogram-based company, through the port’s C&F agent Prohor International (Jahangir Alam).

Earlier, on November 26, 100 tons of rice were brought into the country through the port after several years. These imports were made through C&F agent Prohor International, said Abul Kalam Azad, in charge of Banglabandha Land Port Limited. He said that 99.93 tons of rice were imported in 4 trucks on November 26. In continuation of this, 100.22 tons of rice were imported in 4 trucks yesterday as well.

According to the land port authority, the operations of the Banglabandha land port were launched on September 1, 1997, with the start of bilateral trade activities with Nepal. Then, on January 22, 2011, bilateral trade activities with India were also started through this land port. Import and export of goods with Bhutan started through Banglabandha land port on January 1, 2017.

At least 200 to 250 trucks of goods are imported through this port every day and at least 50 to 100 trucks of goods are exported. Currently, 95 percent of the goods imported through this port are stones. These stones are imported from India and Bhutan. Apart from this, chitagur and lentils are being imported from Nepal and occasionally rice and onions are being imported from India.
