A.P. Moller Maersk (Maersk) has revealed that a new container release process is set to take effect at Germany’s key seaports — Hamburg, Bremerhaven, and Wilhelmshaven.

From 1 October 2025, the system will replace PINs with a secure, traceable digital release order.

The new system enhances supply chain security by allowing only one verified party per container pickup.

The “German Ports” digital platform will facilitate the process, standardise release procedures across terminals, and align with systems used by terminal operators.

The new system encrypts pick-up rights and issues them exclusively through the platform.

Carriers, vendors, and logistics providers will no longer receive container PINs, but must instead obtain digital authorisation through the system.

Maersk urges early registration on the “German Ports” platform to meet technical and training requirements.

The platform supports wider efforts to modernise port operations and strengthen cargo security at major European gateways.

Last month, the Port of Hamburg, Freeport of Riga and LMT signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), aimed at addressing challenges in port infrastructure management in the Baltic Sea.
