Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, Hon’ble Union Minister for Ports, Shipping & Waterways, chaired a high-level review meeting in Kochi today to assess the progress of ongoing and upcoming development initiatives at Cochin Port Authority (CoPA).
The meeting was attended by Shri B. Kasiviswanathan, IRSME, Chairperson of Cochin Port Authority, along with senior officials of CoPA and Cochin Shipyard Ltd. (CSL).
During the discussions, the Minister reviewed critical infrastructure and maritime projects aimed at enhancing port capacity, improving cargo handling efficiency, and strengthening shipbuilding and repair capabilities in the region. Special focus was given to projects that would position Cochin Port as a strategic maritime hub on India’s western coast, while also fostering greater synergy between CoPA and CSL.
Officials briefed the Minister on the status of modernization works, expansion of container handling facilities, cruise terminal development, coastal shipping promotion, and green initiatives being implemented at the port. The review also touched upon plans to attract new investments and further integrate Cochin into global shipping and logistics networks.
Highlighting the government’s vision, Shri Sonowal reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to accelerating port-led development in line with the Sagarmala and Amrit Kaal Maritime Vision 2047. He emphasized the importance of sustainable growth, technology-driven solutions, and job creation through maritime infrastructure.
The Minister appreciated the efforts of Cochin Port and Cochin Shipyard and urged them to ensure timely completion of priority projects. He also assured full support from the Ministry in resolving operational challenges and expediting clearances wherever required.
Cochin Port, strategically located along the international sea route, plays a vital role in India’s maritime trade, while Cochin Shipyard continues to be a leader in shipbuilding and ship repair. Today’s review is expected to provide further momentum to Kerala’s maritime growth story.
