Hambantota International Port (HIP) has recorded a remarkable 151% year-on-year increase in cargo volumes, handling 6,028,493 metric tonnes by September 2025, compared to 2,397,971 metric tonnes during the same period last year. This impressive growth underscores HIP’s emergence as a strategic regional hub despite operational challenges linked to the lifting of Sri Lanka’s vehicle import ban.
Following the removal of import restrictions, HIP faced heightened yard congestion and clearance delays, placing additional pressure on infrastructure, equipment, and workflows. In response, the Operations Department implemented a series of efficiency-driven measures — optimising yard allocation, rebalancing container flows, and refining stacking strategies to maximise space utilisation while maintaining safety and productivity standards.
To further strengthen operations, HIP’s management increased stevedoring manpower, secured additional yard space, and invested in yard expansion projects, ensuring uninterrupted vessel handling and consistent operational performance throughout the surge in demand.
HIP’s strong performance aligns with a broader phase of strategic infrastructure and service enhancements. In late 2024, the port invested USD 41 million in new cranes, raising its container handling capacity to 1 million TEUs per year. The port has also expanded its bunkering and energy services, registering notable growth in LPG throughput and bunker volumes. In addition, vehicle transshipment increased by 26% year-on-year, further reinforcing HIP’s stature as a diversified, multipurpose maritime hub.
“As we move toward the end of the year, HIP remains steadfast in delivering reliable services amid rising demand,” said Wilson Qu, CEO of Hambantota International Port Group (HIPG). “Our teams continue to refine operational processes to absorb ongoing growth, and we are committed to working closely with stakeholders, shipping lines, and government agencies to advance Sri Lanka’s trade, energy, and logistics objectives.”
With sustained investment and operational excellence, Hambantota International Port continues to strengthen its position as a key gateway for regional trade and a driving force in Sri Lanka’s maritime growth story.
