The Chinta Sasidhar-led Vishwa Samudra Group has placed an order for an 8,000-cubic-metre trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD) under the renowned ‘Beagle’ platform at IHC Holland B.V. (Royal IHC), the world’s leading dredger manufacturer.

The new dredger will be built at Royal IHC’s Kinderdijk shipyard in the Netherlands, with delivery scheduled for the summer of 2027. The contract value has not been disclosed.

Promoted by Chinta Sasidhar, former Managing Director of Krishnapatnam Port Co. Ltd. and youngest son of Chinta Visweswara Rao, founder of Navayuga Engineering Co. Ltd., Vishwa Samudra Group is among India’s fastest-growing infrastructure conglomerates. The company already operates two ‘Beaver’ dredgers, previously built at Royal IHC, which support its expanding marine and port operations.

“One of the main reasons for selecting the ‘Beagle’ platform is its proven technology, high efficiency, and shorter delivery cycle,” said Shivdutt Das, Group Managing Director, Vishwa Samudra Group.

“We are committed to creating a lasting impact in India’s infrastructure sector. The ‘Beagle’ platform, coupled with Royal IHC’s expertise, will strengthen our capabilities and support our long-term growth ambitions,” he added.

According to industry estimates, India’s dredging requirement stands at around 120 million cubic metres annually.

Derk te Bokkel, CEO of Royal IHC, said: “Vishwa Samudra’s order highlights the success of our renewed shipbuilding strategy—constructing complex and time-sensitive vessels in the Netherlands while collaborating with partner shipyards for lower-risk projects.”

The ‘Beagle’ platform features standardised TSHDs with hopper capacities ranging from 4,000 to 12,000 cubic metres, designed for fuel efficiency, reduced resistance, and minimal greenhouse gas emissions. Its modular design and proven performance make it a future-ready solution for global dredging operations.

This new dredger will be Royal IHC’s third ‘Beagle’ series vessel for India, reinforcing its strong presence in the country’s growing dredging sector.

The order follows the recent launch of ‘DCI Dredge Godavari’, a 12,000-cubic-metre trailing suction hopper dredger built by Cochin Shipyard Ltd for Dredging Corporation of India Ltd under Royal IHC’s ‘Beagle’ platform. It is the largest and most technologically advanced dredger ever built in India.

According to DCI Chairman M. Angamuthu, two more dredgers of similar capacity are planned to be built at Cochin Shipyard under the same platform.
