Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP), a joint venture between Malaysia’s MMC Group and the Netherlands-based APM Terminals, has announced plans to develop a new berth named Berth Zero as part of its ongoing expansion, the company said in a news release.

The construction contract was awarded to a joint venture between MMC Engineering Sdn. Bhd. and Antara Koh (M) Sdn. Bhd. (MMCE-AKSB JV).

The project includes dredging, reclamation and the construction of a 360-metre berth along PTP’s linear wharf, equipped with four quay cranes and a yard ready for electric rubber-tyred gantry cranes.

PTP Chairman Tan Sri Che Khalib Mohamad Noh said the company’s main expansion plan focuses on optimising its existing footprint, aiming to raise total handling capacity to about 16 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) within two and a half years. He added that the growing demand in the maritime industry drives the development of Berth Zero, which is expected to support the rise in intra-ASEAN trade and strengthen Johor’s and Malaysia’s role in global logistics.

PTP Chief Executive Officer Mark Hardiman noted that the project coincides with the port’s 25th anniversary and marks the first major expansion since the completion of Berths 13 and 14 in 2014. He said the new berth represents the final phase of the port’s current expansion, paving the way for a capacity of around 16 million TEUs and supported by four new quay cranes due for commissioning by 2028.

MMC Engineering CEO Mohamad Asroll Mansor said the company is committed to maintaining safety and quality standards while contributing to Malaysia’s maritime growth.

Antara Koh Managing Director Dato’ Ir. Tay Yew Chong highlighted the 23-year collaboration between the two firms, emphasising their shared commitment to safety and technical excellence.

According to PTP, the contract award followed a transparent and competitive tender process assessing technical capability, safety performance and delivery.

PTP was recently rated by Alphaliner as the world’s fastest-growing port in the first half of 2025 with a +15.4% growth rate, leading among the top 30 global ports. The terminal handled about 1.1 million TEUs monthly on average this year, exceeding 1.2 million TEUs between April and June 2025 without congestion, and recorded over 15,000 moves in a single 12-hour shift.

Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) is a container terminal located in Johor, Malaysia. It operates as a joint venture between MMC Group, a Malaysian infrastructure and utilities conglomerate, and APM Terminals, a global terminal operator headquartered in the Netherlands.
