ECOPORT II, Valenciaport’s initiative to consolidate an environmentally friendly port community, has set objectives for renewable energy deployment and ship charging infrastructure in line with Valenciaport’s Net Zero Emissions plan, which aims for carbon neutrality by 2035, according to the company’s statement.
The plan encompasses facilities at Valencia, Sagunt and Gandia and foresees achieving energy self-sufficiency to meet ports’ consumption needs, backed by an estimated €900 million investment, with €605 million from the Port Authority of Valencia and €295 million from private investors (about $1.06 billion).
The ECOPORT II working group meeting reviewed actions undertaken in 2025 and discussed challenges ahead, including installing on-shore power supply (OPS) charging points for ships at various terminals and other measures to increase the share of locally produced energy; current photovoltaic installations supply 18 % of consumed energy.
Valenciaport has promoted environmental policies through ECOPORT for nearly 30 years and counts 38 member companies collaborating on environmental management methodologies.
The meeting also included presentations on the CLEVER TOOL developed under the ARSINOE project to support the Climate Change Observatory and on the NeXTraIn.PortS mobility training project in Valencia, Rotterdam, Livorno and Piraeus, presented by Senior Project Manager Noemi Monterde of the Valenciaport Foundation. Additionally, Noelia Martínez, Head of Sustainability and Good Governance at KPMG in the Valencian Community and the Region of Murcia, explained how Environmental Management Systems are integrated into Sustainability Information Management Systems and addressed monetisation via Energy Savings Certificates.
