Engineering goods exports from India continued their strong performance in late 2025, supported by robust demand from key global markets and strategic contributions from state-level initiatives, particularly those in Tamil Nadu.
According to recent export data, India’s engineering goods sector has remained a cornerstone of the country’s merchandise shipments, maintaining its position as one of the top export categories. Engineering goods accounted for approximately 26.7 percent of India’s total exports in FY 2024-25, with shipments valued at over $116 billion, reinforcing the sector’s resilience and global competitiveness.
Tamil Nadu Emerging as a Key Export Hub
Within India’s engineering export landscape, Tamil Nadu has posted notable gains. State-wise figures show that Tamil Nadu contributed a significant share of the nation’s engineering exports, with cumulative shipments worth over $18 billion during the latest export cycle — ranking second only to Maharashtra among Indian states.
Industry analysts attribute this rise to the state’s diversified industrial base, which includes machinery, automotive components, and industrial equipment, supported by strong manufacturing clusters and export-oriented infrastructure.
“The engineering sector’s performance reflects India’s growing foothold in high-value manufacturing,” said a trade expert. “Tamil Nadu’s export ecosystem — spanning SMEs to large producers — is playing an increasingly important role in sustaining this momentum.”
Global Demand and Strategic Markets
India’s engineering exports have registered renewed demand in major overseas markets, particularly the United States and the European Union, where shipments have recorded double-digit growth. Recent figures indicate that engineering shipments exceeded $11 billion in November 2025 alone, driven by increasing orders for machinery, automotive parts, and electrical equipment.
This upswing underlines the sector’s adaptability amid shifting global trade patterns, with exporters tapping both established and emerging markets.
Policy Push and Sector Diversification
Export growth has been supported by government initiatives aimed at boosting high-tech and value-added production. Engineering goods, along with electronics and pharmaceuticals, have become central to India’s export strategy, reflecting a shift toward technology-intensive sectors that contribute deeper value to the economy.
Tamil Nadu’s own export basket is also diversified: engineering goods make up roughly 35 percent of the state’s total merchandise exports, complemented by strong performances in electronics and textiles.
Outlook
With global demand for engineered products and advanced manufactured goods on the rise, experts expect Tamil Nadu and India’s broader engineering export sector to sustain growth in the coming quarters. Continued investments in manufacturing ecosystems, export facilitation, and strategic trade partnerships are likely to further bolster the sector’s international footprint.
