Green mobility received a major push on Sunday as the Hon’ble Prime Minister launched a 50-passenger Hybrid Electric Aluminium Catamaran on the Ganga–Hooghly river system in Kolkata. The vessel has been built by Hooghly Cochin Shipyard Limited (HCSL), a wholly owned subsidiary of Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL).

Powered by advanced electric propulsion and Lithium Titanate Oxide (LTO) battery technology, the catamaran is designed to significantly reduce emissions and energy consumption compared to conventional diesel-powered vessels. Officials stated that the project marks a significant milestone in the government’s efforts to promote sustainable and low-carbon solutions for inland water transport.

The aluminium-hulled catamaran combines lightweight construction with hybrid electric technology, enabling higher efficiency, lower operating costs, and reduced environmental impact. It is expected to enhance passenger ferry services on the Ganga–Hooghly while improving air and water quality in the region.

The launch aligns with India’s broader vision for green and sustainable transport under Viksit Bharat @2047 (MAKV 2047), which emphasises clean energy, innovation, and environmentally responsible infrastructure. Authorities noted that such vessels could play a key role in decarbonising inland waterways and scaling up eco-friendly mobility solutions across the country.
