India’s urea imports surpassed 8 million tonnes during April–December 2025, even as domestic urea sales grew 4% year-on-year, reflecting steady fertilizer demand amid government support for agriculture.

Industry sources said the increase in imports was driven by efforts to stabilize domestic supply and meet consumption needs, particularly in regions experiencing higher sowing and fertilizer usage. Despite robust local production, imports remain necessary to ensure adequate availability and prevent regional shortages.

According to official data, urea sales in the nine-month period rose to around 30 million tonnes, reflecting growth across key agricultural states and strong adoption of government subsidy programs. Analysts said the combination of rising domestic consumption and import support has helped maintain stable prices for farmers.

Government officials noted that while India is largely self-sufficient in urea production, imports play a crucial role in balancing supply-demand fluctuations, particularly during periods of high planting activity or uneven monsoon distribution.

Experts added that continued monitoring of domestic production, imports, and stock levels will be essential to ensure fertilizer availability ahead of the rabi harvest and to support India’s agricultural productivity goals.
