A sharp rise in diesel prices is putting significant pressure on the trucking sector, squeezing margins and prompting freight forwarders to brace for potential strike-related disruptions across key logistics corridors.

Transport operators have reported a steady increase in fuel costs in recent weeks, with diesel accounting for a major share of operating expenses. The surge has eroded profitability, particularly for small and medium fleet owners who operate on thin margins and have limited ability to pass on costs.

Freight forwarders warn that the situation could escalate into protests or strikes by truckers demanding freight rate revisions and government intervention. Any disruption in trucking services could impact cargo movement from ports, industrial hubs, and agricultural markets, leading to delays in supply chains.

The pressure is being felt across sectors, including containerised cargo, bulk commodities, and perishables, where timely transportation is critical. Exporters and importers are closely monitoring developments, as disruptions could affect delivery schedules and increase logistics costs.

Industry stakeholders have called for mechanisms such as fuel surcharge adjustments and more flexible freight pricing to help offset rising costs. There are also demands for policy support to stabilise fuel prices and ensure the sustainability of road transport operations.

With trucking forming the backbone of India’s logistics network, prolonged cost pressures and potential labour unrest could have wider implications for trade and economic activity if not addressed promptly.
