Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL), in collaboration with Yamato Chain Mfg. Co., Ltd. and MOL Techno-Trade Co., Ltd., has developed a new cargo-handling device called the “Skater” to quickly move vehicles that become temporarily inoperable while on board car carriers.

The Skater is designed to address one of the key operational challenges in vehicle shipping, where even a single stalled or disabled vehicle can disrupt the carefully planned loading and unloading sequence. On car carriers, thousands of vehicles are parked in tightly packed configurations, making the rapid removal of immobilized vehicles essential to maintaining operational efficiency.

Traditionally, ports have relied on tow trucks to move such vehicles, a process that can take several hours, particularly at terminals where towing equipment is not immediately available. The newly developed Skater enables operators to mount the device directly onto the disabled vehicle and move it safely in approximately five minutes, significantly reducing cargo-handling delays.

According to MOL, vehicles can become temporarily immobilized due to reasons such as low fuel levels, discharged batteries, or other minor mechanical issues. By eliminating the need for external towing equipment, the Skater allows cargo operations to resume quickly, minimizing bottlenecks and improving turnaround times at ports.

The company said the innovation will enhance the efficiency and reliability of automobile transportation while supporting smoother cargo operations across its global network.

MOL stated that the development reflects its ongoing commitment to maintaining a stable automotive logistics system and delivering safe, high-quality transportation services through continuous operational innovation.
