Ocean Network Express and HMM have launched a new Mediterranean–West Africa shipping service, providing a fresh boost to cargo transshipment activity at Port of Algeciras.
The new route is expected to strengthen connectivity between southern Europe and key West African markets, offering shippers improved frequency, transit options, and access to growing regional demand.
Algeciras is set to benefit as a central relay hub, where containers can be efficiently transferred between mainline vessels and regional feeder services. Its strategic location at the entrance to the Mediterranean makes it one of Europe’s most important transshipment gateways.
Industry analysts said the service reflects continued carrier interest in Africa-bound trade lanes, supported by rising consumer demand, infrastructure investment, and expanding import-export flows across West Africa.
The partnership also highlights how carriers are reshaping network strategies to optimise vessel deployment and improve resilience amid global supply chain disruptions.
Port stakeholders expect the added service to support throughput growth, enhance hub competitiveness, and reinforce Algeciras’ role in linking Europe, Africa, and international east-west trade routes.
