Singapore has awarded a grant to Sumitomo Corporation, K Line, and NYK Line to support an ammonia bunkering trial, advancing efforts to develop alternative marine fuels for the shipping sector.

The pilot project is expected to test the operational, safety, and logistical requirements of supplying ammonia as a marine fuel, which is being explored as a low-carbon option for future vessel propulsion.

Industry stakeholders view the initiative as an important step toward building the infrastructure and regulatory frameworks needed for large-scale adoption of next-generation fuels.

Singapore, one of the world’s leading bunkering hubs, has been actively promoting trials and partnerships to strengthen its role in the maritime energy transition.

The participation of major Japanese shipping and trading groups underscores growing industry interest in ammonia as carriers seek pathways to meet tightening emissions targets.

Results from the trial are expected to help shape future standards, safety protocols, and commercial readiness for ammonia bunkering in global shipping markets.
