The first batch of Made-in-India Citroën Basalt vehicles has been dispatched to South Africa, marking a significant milestone in the company’s export strategy and highlighting India’s growing role as a manufacturing base for global automobile markets.

The shipment underscores Citroën’s confidence in India’s production capabilities and the country’s expanding importance within parent group Stellantis’ international supply network. Manufactured at the company’s Indian facility, the Basalt is expected to cater to rising demand in overseas markets while showcasing the competitiveness of locally built vehicles.

Industry experts said the export move reflects a broader trend of global automakers using India as a hub for producing cost-efficient, high-quality vehicles for emerging markets. With competitive manufacturing costs, a strong supplier base and improving logistics infrastructure, India has become an attractive destination for export-oriented automotive production.

South Africa represents an important market for vehicle manufacturers, with demand for practical and value-driven passenger vehicles continuing to grow. The dispatch of the Basalt could help Citroën strengthen its footprint in the region while diversifying its export destinations beyond domestic sales.

The development also supports India’s ambition to become a leading automotive export centre. Passenger vehicle shipments from India have risen steadily in recent years, driven by growing global acceptance of locally manufactured models and increased localization by multinational brands.

For Citroën, the Basalt export programme may pave the way for additional shipments to other international markets, further integrating its Indian operations into the company’s long-term global expansion plans.
