Afcons Infrastructure has emerged as the lowest bidder for the massive breakwater construction package at the upcoming Vadhvan Port project in Maharashtra, submitting a quote of ₹5,301 crore. The contract is considered one of the key marine infrastructure packages for the deep-draft port being developed on India’s western coast.
The breakwater package forms a critical part of the Vadhvan Port development, which is being positioned as one of India’s largest greenfield deep-sea ports with the capacity to handle ultra-large container vessels and support rising international trade volumes. The project is expected to significantly enhance India’s maritime infrastructure and strengthen cargo handling capabilities on the west coast.
Industry sources said Afcons Infrastructure outbid several major engineering and construction firms in the tendering process. The scope of work includes construction of protective marine structures designed to safeguard the port basin and berthing facilities from strong sea conditions, enabling year-round vessel operations.
The Vadhvan Port project is being developed by Vadhvan Port Project Ltd, a joint venture between Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority and the Maharashtra Maritime Board. Once operational, the port is expected to emerge as a major container transshipment and cargo gateway, reducing dependence on foreign transshipment hubs and improving India’s export-import logistics efficiency.
Experts said the project aligns with India’s broader maritime infrastructure expansion strategy under the Sagarmala initiative, aimed at boosting port-led industrialisation, coastal shipping, and logistics connectivity. The development is also expected to generate significant employment opportunities and attract investments in industrial and logistics zones around the port region.
