Bengaluru’s air cargo gateway has emerged as the leading hub for mango exports in South India, surpassing Chennai in handling outbound shipments of the seasonal fruit as exporters increasingly leverage the airport’s connectivity, cargo infrastructure and streamlined logistics services.
The surge in mango exports through Bengaluru reflects growing international demand for premium Indian varieties, including Alphonso, Banganapalli and other region-specific cultivars destined for markets across Europe, the Middle East and Asia. Exporters have been routing larger volumes through Bengaluru to capitalize on faster cargo processing and extensive international flight networks.
Industry sources say Bengaluru Airport has strengthened its position by offering efficient cold-chain facilities, dedicated perishables-handling infrastructure, and strong airline connectivity to key overseas destinations. These advantages have helped reduce transit times and maintain fruit quality, a critical factor for highly perishable agricultural exports.
Chennai Airport, traditionally an important gateway for perishable cargo from southern India, continues to handle significant mango export volumes but has faced increasing competition as exporters seek greater operational flexibility and access to a wider range of international services. The growing rivalry highlights the importance of logistics efficiency in attracting high-value agricultural cargo.
The competition between the two airports comes as India’s mango export season gathers momentum, with producers and exporters aiming to tap rising demand from overseas consumers. Air freight remains the preferred mode for premium mango shipments, enabling exporters to deliver fresh produce quickly while meeting strict quality and shelf-life requirements.
Exporters note that improved cargo infrastructure and coordinated support from airport operators, airlines and regulatory agencies have played a crucial role in facilitating larger volumes of perishables. Enhanced cold-storage capacity and faster customs clearance processes have further strengthened Bengaluru’s appeal as an export gateway.
The strong performance of mango exports through Bengaluru is expected to boost the airport’s broader perishables cargo business and reinforce its role in supporting agricultural trade. Meanwhile, Chennai is likely to pursue additional infrastructure and service enhancements as it seeks to capture a larger share of the growing export market.
With global demand for Indian mangoes continuing to expand, both airports are expected to remain key players in facilitating the movement of fresh produce, supporting farmers, exporters and the country’s agricultural export ambitions.
