Hambantota International Port (HIP) has recorded its highest-ever monthly throughput, marking a major operational milestone and underscoring the port’s growing role as a strategic maritime hub in the Indian Ocean. The record performance was driven by strong growth in vehicle transshipment, container handling, bulk cargo, and general cargo operations.
The increase in cargo volumes reflects rising demand from international shipping lines seeking efficient transshipment and logistics services along one of the world’s busiest east-west trade routes. Hambantota’s strategic location near major international shipping lanes continues to attract vessel calls and strengthen its position as a preferred hub for regional and global maritime trade.
Vehicle transshipment remained one of the port’s strongest performing segments, with Hambantota continuing to handle large volumes of automobiles destined for markets across Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. The port has established itself as a leading regional automotive transshipment centre, supported by dedicated vehicle terminals and modern cargo-handling infrastructure.
In addition to automotive logistics, higher volumes of containerised cargo, dry bulk, breakbulk, and project cargo contributed to the record monthly performance. Ongoing investments in terminal capacity, digitalisation, and operational efficiency have enabled the port to accommodate increasing cargo flows while maintaining high productivity and service standards.
The record throughput also highlights the success of Hambantota’s strategy to diversify cargo segments and expand value-added logistics services. Enhanced connectivity with regional shipping networks and improved multimodal transport links have strengthened the port’s appeal to shipping lines, logistics providers, and international traders.
Port officials noted that the milestone reflects growing customer confidence in Hambantota’s capabilities and reinforces its contribution to Sri Lanka’s maritime and logistics sector. As cargo volumes continue to rise, the port plans to further expand its infrastructure and operational capacity to support future growth and strengthen its role as a key gateway for international trade in the region.
