CMA CGM and MSC have announced new Panama Canal-related charges for container shipments from Asia to the US East Coast and US Gulf, with different rates and effective dates.

CMA CGM will introduce a Panama Canal Adjustment Factor of US$500 per TEU from 10 September 2026. The charge will apply to cargo moving from the Far East via the Panama Canal to the US East Coast and US Gulf.

The CMA CGM adjustment will cover all cargo, although shipments from Bangladesh to the US East Coast are excluded.

Meanwhile, MSC will revise its Panama Canal Surcharge from 12 September 2026, based on the container gate-in date.

    The revised MSC rates are:

    20-foot container: US$149
    40-foot container: US$297
    45-foot container: US$376

The surcharge will apply to all cargo types and remain in effect until further notice.

MSC said continuing draft restrictions at the Panama Canal are reducing vessel capacity on services using the waterway. Its surcharge will apply to shipments originating from Southeast Asia, China, South Korea and Japan and destined for the US East Coast and US Gulf Coast.

The announcements highlight the continuing cost and capacity pressures affecting container services through the Panama Canal, with carriers adjusting charges to reflect the impact of waterway restrictions on their operations.
