Port Houston has kicked off the year on a high note, achieving record-breaking total container volumes in January.

The month saw a remarkable total of 332,961 TEUs, marking a 4% increase compared to the same period last year. Notably, container imports rose by 3% to reach 154,493 TEUs, mainly attributed to robust imports from China ahead of the Lunar New Year festivities.

Additionally, loaded export volumes witnessed a significant surge of 9% compared to last year’s figures, totalling 124,137 TEUs. This remarkable performance in loaded exports for January establishes a new record for Port Houston.

“Import and export demand through Houston remains strong and we are certainly off to a great start in 2024,” pointed out Roger Guenther, executive director at Port Houston.

When examining the US port’s multipurpose facilities, we see that steel volumes experienced a significant 46% decline in January compared to the corresponding month last year, while across all terminals of Port Houston, the total tonnage witnessed a 6% drop in January, amounting to 4,187,541 tons.
