Air Cargo Traffic Rises 3% as Flower Shipments Boost Volumes

Global air cargo traffic rose by 3% in late April, driven largely by a surge in flower shipments linked to seasonal demand peaks. Exporters ramped up volumes to meet strong consumption tied to events and holidays, particularly in key markets across Europe, North America, and Asia.

The spike in perishable cargo placed additional pressure on air freight capacity, with airlines prioritising high-value and time-sensitive shipments such as fresh flowers. This shift helped lift overall load factors and provided a short-term boost to freight rates on select routes.

Industry participants note that while the increase reflects seasonal dynamics, it also highlights the growing importance of specialised cargo segments in supporting air freight demand. Volumes are expected to stabilise in the coming weeks as the seasonal rush eases.
