The Union Cabinet has approved a ₹1,570 crore ship repair facility at Vadinar, marking a significant step in strengthening India’s maritime infrastructure.
The proposed facility is expected to enhance domestic ship repair capabilities, reducing dependence on foreign yards and positioning India as a competitive hub for maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) services. Strategically located along the western coast, Vadinar offers proximity to major international shipping routes, making it an ideal location for such a project.
Officials said the new facility will cater to a wide range of vessels, including cargo ships, tankers, and offshore units, supporting both domestic and international clients. It is also expected to generate employment and boost ancillary industries in the region.
The initiative aligns with the government’s broader maritime development agenda, aimed at improving port infrastructure, enhancing logistics efficiency, and promoting self-reliance in critical sectors.
Once operational, the Vadinar ship repair facility is likely to play a key role in attracting global shipping lines and strengthening India’s position in the global maritime services market.
