The Union Cabinet has approved rail infrastructure projects worth ₹3,907 crore in Odisha and Jharkhand, aimed at strengthening freight connectivity, improving passenger services, and supporting industrial growth in the mineral-rich eastern region.

The approved projects include the construction of new railway lines and capacity enhancement works designed to ease congestion on busy routes, improve operational efficiency, and facilitate faster movement of coal, iron ore, steel, cement, and other bulk commodities. The expanded network is also expected to enhance connectivity to ports, industrial hubs, and logistics corridors.

According to the government, the rail expansion will improve transportation links for several districts across Odisha and Jharkhand, providing better access to markets and boosting regional economic development. The projects are expected to generate significant employment opportunities during the construction phase while contributing to long-term economic growth.

The infrastructure investment aligns with the Centre’s broader strategy to modernise the national railway network, enhance multimodal logistics, and reduce transportation costs through improved freight mobility. It also supports initiatives such as PM Gati Shakti by strengthening last-mile connectivity and integrating rail infrastructure with other modes of transport.

Once completed, the projects are expected to increase line capacity, improve train operations, and support the growing freight demand from the eastern region, reinforcing the role of railways in India’s expanding logistics and supply chain ecosystem.
