Madhu Nair, one of India’s most accomplished shipbuilding leaders, is set to receive a one-year extension as Chairman and Managing Director of Cochin Shipyard Ltd after completing a decade-long tenure this month, according to multiple sources.
Nair is due to superannuate in January, but the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has recommended his re-appointment, citing the government’s focus on continuity as major shipbuilding initiatives gain momentum. A similar extension was recently granted to ONGC chief Arun Kumar Singh.
Under Nair’s leadership since 2016, Cochin Shipyard has undergone a transformative expansion—building the bulk of India’s first indigenous aircraft carrier, securing global orders including from CMA CGM, constructing a second dry dock and an international ship repair facility worth ₹2,769 crore, and acquiring and reviving Tebma Shipyards.
He also played a key role in forging strategic partnerships, including an MoU with HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering and a proposed JV with DP World’s Drydocks World to set up India’s first ship repair cluster.
With a full order book till 2029 and ambitious new projects such as an 80-acre block fabrication facility, Cochin Shipyard has grown into a ₹42,500-crore company by market value. Nair’s extension, if approved, would ensure leadership continuity as India pursues its goal of becoming a top global shipbuilding nation.
