Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) has secured a new contract from Polestar Maritime Limited to build two battery-electric green harbour tugs as part of India’s effort to advance sustainable port operations.
The 60-tonne bollard pull tugs will be constructed at CSL’s Kochi facilities — with work shared between CSL and its subsidiary Udupi-CSL — and are designed to provide zero direct emissions during harbour operations.
These vessels, built to established Robert Allan Limited designs, will support towage services at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) under the Government of India’s Green Tug Transition Programme (GTTP), which aims to accelerate the adoption of cleaner propulsion technologies in the maritime sector.
The order underscores CSL’s growing role in the domestic shipbuilding market for eco-friendly harbour support craft and aligns with broader initiatives to decarbonise port operations nationwide.
