India’s logistics sector is set for a significant shift towards sustainability with a new partnership between Container Corporation of India (CONCOR) and The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI). The two entities have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a Centre of Excellence (COE) for Green and Sustainable Logistics, which will focus on advancing environmentally responsible practices in the industry. This initiative is poised to reshape the logistics landscape, aiming to create a more eco-friendly, efficient, and cost-effective transportation ecosystem.
The COE will be housed within TERI’s Transport and Urban Governance Division, leveraging research and policy development to drive sustainable solutions. It is designed to foster innovation across various logistics sectors, including rail transportation, terminal operations, warehousing, and storage management. One of the key objectives of the partnership is to align logistics practices with national and international environmental standards, ensuring that the sector can reduce its carbon footprint while increasing operational efficiency.
CONCOR’s commitment to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) initiatives is evident in its ongoing projects. The company has already integrated several sustainability measures, such as deploying LNG-powered trailers and electric vehicles for intra-terminal operations. Furthermore, CONCOR is constructing India’s first net-zero warehouse in Sriperumbudur, a landmark project that will set new standards in green infrastructure. These initiatives not only support India’s sustainability goals but also demonstrate how logistics companies can play a pivotal role in reducing emissions in the supply chain.
The establishment of the COE signals a broader movement within India’s logistics sector towards sustainability. By fostering research, policy development, and collaboration with industry stakeholders, the partnership between CONCOR and TERI aims to drive innovations that will reduce logistics costs, enhance green practices, and ultimately contribute to the nation’s goal of achieving a net-zero future. This initiative marks a crucial step in creating a logistics ecosystem that supports economic growth while prioritizing environmental responsibility.
