Cochin Shipyard Ltd (CSL) has entered into a joint venture agreement with HBL Engineering Ltd to develop and commercialise electric mobility and energy storage technologies for the maritime sector.

The collaboration will focus on building advanced marine batteries, battery management systems (BMS), electric propulsion motors, power electronics, and charging infrastructure. The joint venture aims to address both domestic and international markets, aligning with the global push towards sustainable and green shipping solutions.

Jose VJ, Director (Finance) and CMD (Additional Charge), CSL, described the partnership as a “watershed moment” for the company. He noted that the initiative marks a key step in strengthening CSL’s green maritime ecosystem and emphasised the importance of collaborating with domestic technology firms to develop indigenous, state-of-the-art marine battery solutions. He added that the move would support the Indian maritime sector in meeting evolving green shipping requirements.

AJ Prasad, CMD of HBL Engineering, said the partnership reflects CSL’s proactive approach to accelerating the indigenisation of electric propulsion and related systems in the maritime industry. He highlighted that combining HBL’s decades of expertise in specialised batteries and experience in electric motors with CSL’s institutional support would enhance user confidence in adopting locally developed technologies.

The joint venture is expected to play a significant role in advancing India’s capabilities in clean maritime technologies while reducing dependence on imported energy systems.
