As preparations gather pace for the Vibrant Gujarat Regional Conference scheduled in Vadodara on June 29-30, officials have highlighted the transformative impact of the Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) at Varnama, where freight train speeds have nearly tripled and transit times for key commodities have been significantly reduced.

The conference is expected to showcase major infrastructure developments and investment opportunities across Central Gujarat, with the DFC emerging as one of the region’s most significant logistics success stories.

Passing through around 30 villages in Vadodara district, the freight corridor has strengthened rail connectivity for industries and trade, while helping decongest one of India’s busiest railway networks. Officials associated with the Varnama section of the DFC said freight trains operating on conventional rail routes earlier travelled at average speeds of just 25-26 kmph due to heavy congestion caused by the movement of both passenger and freight trains on the same tracks.

With the commissioning of the dedicated freight network, average train speeds have increased substantially, enabling faster and more reliable transportation of goods. The separation of freight and passenger operations has improved network efficiency, reduced delays and enhanced capacity utilisation across the rail system.

Industry stakeholders say the corridor has particularly benefited sectors dependent on bulk cargo movement, including manufacturing, engineering, chemicals, cement and agricultural commodities. Faster freight movement has lowered logistics costs, improved supply chain reliability and enhanced the competitiveness of businesses operating in Gujarat and neighbouring regions.

Officials noted that the DFC has also reduced pressure on conventional railway routes, allowing passenger services to operate more efficiently while creating additional capacity for future traffic growth.

The project is expected to feature prominently during discussions at the Vibrant Gujarat Regional Conference, where policymakers, investors and industry leaders will examine how large-scale infrastructure investments are reshaping the state’s economic landscape and supporting India’s broader logistics modernisation agenda.

The Dedicated Freight Corridor is widely regarded as a cornerstone of India’s efforts to improve freight mobility, reduce transportation bottlenecks and strengthen multimodal logistics connectivity, with Gujarat continuing to play a central role in the country’s evolving trade and industrial ecosystem.
